Marathi subtitle & caption generator

Marathi captions can be in मराठी Devanagari, in Roman letters, or translated into English, with every word timed. Marathi uses the same script as Hindi, so all the editor's Devanagari faces work for it — Tiro Devanagari Marathi included.

No Marathi templates have been published yet. Any template in the full gallery can still caption Marathi: letters its own font cannot draw come from the Marathi fallback face.

Captioning in Marathi

Because Marathi uses Devanagari, the same script as Hindi, most Hindi fonts and templates work for it. The differences are small but real: some letters that Hindi hardly uses, a typeface cut with Marathi in mind, and a grammar that joins endings to words rather than adding small words after them.

Letters Hindi seldom uses

Marathi uses ळ all the time, in words like वेळ, टाळी and बाळ, and no Devanagari face in the editor lacks it. The eyelash र, ऱ, appears in spellings such as ऱ्हास; Bakbak One is the single face without it. ॲ represents the English a sound in borrowed words like ॲप and ॲक्शन, and Alkatra, Halant, Karma and Teko don't include it.

When a face lacks a letter, the caption doesn't show a gap. Instead a fallback face draws that one character, which can look mismatched next to its neighbours. Choose a face under Native script font that contains the letter if this bothers you.

Tiro Devanagari Marathi and the fallback

The list includes Tiro Devanagari in three versions, Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit, and they are not duplicates. In the Marathi version, ल and श take the shapes Marathi printing has traditionally favoured, and क, ट, ण, प, म and ह are drawn a little differently from the Hindi version too. It is the obvious first serif to try for Marathi readers.

Latin-font templates contain no Devanagari, so their Marathi text falls back to Baloo 2, Devanagari's bold rounded fallback. Setting a Native script font affects the Devanagari alone, and English words in the same caption keep the template's own face. Good places to start:

  • Mukta or Noto Sans Devanagari, both with ळ, ऱ and ॲ, for sentence-length captions.
  • Khand, Rajdhani or Pragati Narrow, condensed faces that all have ॲ, when a long Marathi word has to fit beside others.
  • For a serif carrying the Marathi letterforms noted above: Tiro Devanagari Marathi.

Endings, romanisation and translation

Hindi writes घर में and मुंबई को; Marathi writes घरात and मुंबईला, joining the ending to the word. Marathi captions therefore hold fewer but longer words, and a four-word style can overcrowd a vertical frame. Since the automatic emphasis mark favours long words, in Marathi the mark often falls on a word that has an ending fused to it. Select the word you actually want and press E to move it.

The romanised version of Marathi is generated by converting the Devanagari transcript, and some sounds have no agreed Latin spelling: ळ shows up as l, L or lh, च as ch or ts. Give every name one spelling throughout. English translation opens the video to viewers outside Maharashtra. Sentences are timed to the speech, though the words inside each are spread over it, so watch it all before exporting.

Questions

Why does one letter in my Marathi caption look different from the rest?

Your font lacks that letter, most often ॲ or ऱ, so a fallback face draws it. Switch to a Native script font that includes it, such as Tiro Devanagari Marathi or Mukta.

Do Hindi templates work for Marathi?

Yes, since both languages use Devanagari and the words appear correctly. If your captions need ॲ or ऱ, check that the template's font has them.
