Open-source licences

Part of what Captionwale runs in your browser is open-source software. Below is each component, the licence it comes under and the place its source code is kept.

Last updated: November 2026

01FFmpeg (ffmpeg.wasm)

  • If your browser cannot decode a video's format — such as HEVC video from an iPhone in Chrome on certain computers, or ProRes, WMV or AVI — Captionwale converts it on your device using FFmpeg, which the ffmpeg.wasm project has compiled to WebAssembly. This conversion does not send the video off your device.
  • FFmpeg core (@ffmpeg/core 0.12.10) is released under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. It is served unmodified. You can get its source code from ffmpeg.wasm and FFmpeg, and read the full licence at GPL-2.0.
  • The JavaScript library of ffmpeg.wasm (@ffmpeg/ffmpeg 0.12.15) is released under the MIT licence.

02Mediabunny

  • Used in your browser to read, encode and write video and audio when you export or convert. It comes under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and its source code is at Mediabunny.

03MediaPipe

  • Locates the person in a frame so that captions can sit behind them. It comes under the Apache License 2.0, and its source code is at MediaPipe.

04Source requests and questions
